Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu Earns PhD in Policy and Strategic Studies from Yakubu Gowon University
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honorable Benjamin Okezie Kalu has earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Policy and Strategic Studies from Yakubu Gowon University formerly known as the University of Abuja.
The achievement marks a significant milestone in his academic and public service career. Kalu, who represents the Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State successfully defended his doctoral thesis titled “Government Capacity to Integrate International Climate Adaptation Strategies and Policies in Nigeria.
His research addresses critical gaps in Nigeria’s climate change policies focusing on how the country can better incorporate global climate adaptation frameworks into national strategies to address varied regional climate vulnerabilities.
Kalu, a prolific legislator with over 100 bills introduced in the 10th National Assembly, also holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Laws from the University of Calabar.
He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Laws (LL.D) degree. Beyond his legislative work, he has amassed various international certificates relating to governance, human rights, illicit trade, environmental crimes and arbitration from institutions in Italy the Netherlands, the USA, Australia and the UK.
Following his successful thesis defense, Kalu expressed gratitude to the university highlighting the importance of supporting Nigerian academic institutions for national development.
He stated that he approached the doctoral program as a student first, emphasizing humility and a commitment to learning over titles. He sees his academic work as directly relevant to his legislative role particularly in shaping national climate policies.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, Professor Patricia Manko Lar received Kalu after the defense to mark this academic accomplishment.
Kalu’s achievement underscores a blending of public service with academic excellence reflecting his dedication to contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s policymaking and development challenges through rigorous scholarship and practical governance experience.
