Doku Marks Derby Triumph with Baptism After Manchester City’s Win
Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku combined football glory with a personal milestone on Sunday, heading straight from the Etihad Stadium to church for his baptism after starring in City’s 3-0 victory over Manchester United.
The 23-year-old Belgian international was instrumental in the derby win, providing assists for Phil Foden and Erling Haaland as Pep Guardiola’s men outclassed their rivals. But for Doku, the day meant more than just three points.
Speaking after the game, he described his baptism as the true highlight of his day. “If I can be honest, this was already a victory,” Doku said. “I was excited even before the match because I knew after the game I was going to be baptised. That’s why I’m very happy with the performance as well.”
Doku explained that the decision was a deliberate step in his Christian faith, saying baptism symbolised leaving behind his old life and beginning a new one with God.
“You resurrect with God, with Jesus Christ. You can do it as a kid, but when you’re older you really realise what you’re doing. That’s what I wanted,” he said.
The timing of his baptism came as City look to rediscover consistency after recent defeats. The win over United has boosted confidence ahead of Thursday’s Champions League clash with Napoli, where Doku will face his Belgian teammate Kevin De Bruyne, who recently joined the Italian side.
“It’s exciting because a week ago I played with him for Belgium and now I’ll play against him,” Doku added. “I’m sure he’ll be happy to come back, but we’ll try to win for sure.”
