“Don’t Become Second Wives to Broke Men” — Matchmaker Maryama’s Advice to Women Sparks Online Reactions
Popular Abuja-based matchmaker, Maryama, has stirred massive conversations across social media after boldly advising women never to become second wives to poor or financially struggling men.
In a video posted on her official Instagram page on Monday night, October 28, 2025, the relationship expert cautioned women who enter polygamous marriages out of love or pity, insisting that financial stability should be the main consideration.
According to her, it makes no sense for a woman to share a man who cannot adequately provide for his existing family.
Maryama, known for her candid relationship opinions, stated that if a woman chooses to be a second wife, it should only be to a man who has the means to take care of both families comfortably.
She emphasized that such a man should be wealthy what she described as “an Alhaji with money” before any woman considers joining his household.
Her message aligns with Islamic teachings that permit a man to marry up to four wives only if he can cater to them equally.
However, her delivery especially the phrase, “I said what I said Ladies, make sure you marry for money” has drawn mixed reactions online.
While some social media users applauded her for speaking the “bitter truth,” others accused her of promoting materialism and discouraging genuine love.
One user, @saffiyah_rolling_dollar, supported her view, writing, “She’s not misleading anyone. That’s the truth. Why would a man struggling to feed his first wife want to marry another? And why would a woman choose to suffer in the name of love?”
Another user, @heisbrado, added, “Even if a man has four wives and still cheats, as long as he has money, these women will stay. Nothing matters more to them than money.”
Meanwhile, critics like @_lanrepounds disagreed, urging Maryama to stop “misleading young women,” while @kanimodoofficial joked, “Even rich men don’t want second wives anymore; women’s wahala too much.”
Despite the backlash, Maryama appears unfazed by the criticism. Her video continues to trend, with many Nigerians debating whether love or financial security should come first in marriage.
