“Don’t Mix Politics with Tradition,” Obasanjo Cautions New Olubadan Ladoja

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Oba Abdul-Rasheed Ladoja, the newly to-be-crowned Olubadan of Ibadan, while offering crucial advice for his reign.

In a statement shared through his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo urged the new monarch to ensure that his traditional leadership remains distinct from political influences.

He emphasized that the role of a traditional ruler demands humility, patience, tolerance, and divine wisdom.

Obasanjo stated, “I take this opportunity to congratulate you, Ade a pe lori, bata a pe lese. It is an exalted and responsible position to be the traditional ruler of all Ibadan people.

It requires humility, patience, divine wisdom, tolerance, and advice from wide and varied quarters to succeed.

Traditional rulership does not compete or conflict with political rulership. I wish you all the best and the grace, guidance, and direction of Almighty God.”

The former president also highlighted the importance of consulting a broad spectrum of advisors and exercising sound judgment to fulfill the duties of Olubadan effectively.

Oba Abdul-Rasheed Ladoja is scheduled to be crowned as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland on Friday, September 26, 2025, in a ceremony that marks a historic moment for the city and its people.

Obasanjo’s counsel reflects a broader call for traditional rulers to serve as unifying figures, balancing cultural heritage with the challenges of modern governance.
