Ebonyi Police Officers Interrogated Over Alleged ₦25 Million Baby Trafficking Scandal

Three police officers from the Ebonyi State Command are currently under interrogation at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Enugu over their alleged roles in the abduction and sale of a newborn baby boy for ₦25 million.

The officers under investigation include SP Loveth Uche, head of the Juvenile and Women Centre (JWC), W/Insp. Maureen Otum, and Inspector Valentine Akam.

The case involves Susannah Nwanneka Nweze, who gave birth at a police clinic where, according to her family, the child was sold without their consent. A petition submitted to the Assistant Inspector General of Police by the family of Mr. Nweze Philip Obasi of Ohaozara LGA, accuses the officers of conspiracy, child trafficking, and unlawful detention.

Other state officials, including Mr. Nkwuda Emmanuel of the Ebonyi Ministry of Women Affairs and Mrs. Nneka Akam of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), were also invited for questioning over alleged conspiracy in the same case.

Nwanneka’s family alleges that NSCDC operatives detained her for weeks and tampered with her statements during the investigation.

Following media reports and public outcry, the NSCDC transferred the case to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

However, fresh updates confirm that the FCID has summoned the accused officers for a formal interrogation to determine their individual involvement in the shocking case of baby trafficking.
