Edo North Conscience Demands Impeachment of Edo Assembly Speaker Following APC’s Majority Status.
A call for the removal of Hon. Blessing Agbebaku as Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly has emerged from a group named Edo North Conscience (ENC), following the All Progressives Congress (APC) gaining majority status in the assembly.
According to reports this demand was made in a statement released just a day after the APC officially informed the Speaker about its new majority status in the assembly.
The statement, issued after a stakeholders’ meeting and signed by the group’s chairman, Mr. Oshioke Aledeh, and Secretary, Mr. Tunde Balogun, highlighted the significant change in the political landscape, which resulted from the defection of four opposition members to the ruling APC.
Currently, the APC holds 13 seats in the House while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has 11, giving the APC a clear advantage in matters concerning the assembly’s principal officers.
The defections included three lawmakers from the PDP—Donald Okogbe (Akoko-Edo II), Sunday Ojiezele (Esan South-East Constituency), Bright Iyamu (Orhionmwon II)—along with Richard Edosa from the Labour Party (Oredo West).
The group expressed that it is essential for the APC to claim the Speaker’s position and other key roles within the assembly, arguing that Agbebaku’s continuation as Speaker, despite representing a minority party, undermines the assembly’s interests and the state as a whole.
They pledged to initiate an impeachment process aimed at removing Hon. Agbebaku from his position, asserting that he remains loyal to the PDP despite his efforts to align with Governor Monday Okpebholo.
