EEDL Clarifies Metering and Billing Processes in Ebonyi State

Eastland Electricity Distribution Ltd (EEDL), a subsidiary of Enugu Electricity Distribution Plc, has clarified issues relating to metering and billing for electricity customers in Ebonyi State, reaffirming its commitment to transparency, fairness, and improved service delivery.

The clarification was disclosed by the Managing Director, EEDL, Engr. Nnamdi Chuka-Nwosu, during an exclusive chat with newsmen on Thursday in Abakaliki.

Speaking on the metering process, Engr. Nnamdi Chuka-Nwosu, explained that meter application is completely free of charge and has been simplified to ensure ease and convenience for customers.

“Customers can apply for meters online through our website or visit any of our Customer Service offices for guidance. The metering process is regulated and structured under approved national frameworks to ensure transparency and standard pricing,” the Chuka-Nwosu stated.

He clarified that meters are provided under the Federal Government–approved Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme, where licensed MAP vendors supply meters at rates approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

“While EEDL facilitates the process and interfaces with customers, meter pricing and payments are handled strictly in line with NERC-approved guidelines through licensed MAP vendors. This ensures uniformity and regulatory compliance nationwide,” the Managing Director added.

He further disclosed that the company has installed over One Thousand Five Hundred (1,500) meters in Ebonyi State at no cost to customers under the Federal Government’s Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF), an intervention initiative aimed at accelerating nationwide metering.

He noted that customers who opt for the MAP scheme will have the cost refunded gradually through energy vending as stipulated by regulation.

Engr. Chuka-Nwosu, while addressing concerns about estimated billing, emphasized that it is a regulated interim arrangement applicable to customers who are yet to be metered.

“Estimated billing is implemented nationwide in line with NERC regulations and is not peculiar to Ebonyi State. We encourage customers with billing concerns to utilize our established complaint resolution channels for prompt review and necessary adjustments,” Chuka-Nwosu stated.

The company also clarified that the requirement for customers to engage Licensed Electrical Contractors of Nigeria (LECAN) for wiring certification is a regulatory provision and not an EEDL policy. Customers are free to engage any licensed contractor of their choice, and professional fees charged by such contractors are paid directly to them, not to EEDL.

EEDL reiterated that it applies uniform metering and billing policies across all areas within its franchise and does not operate any state-specific regime.

The company assured customers of its continued commitment to regulatory compliance, operational transparency, and enhanced customer experience in Ebonyi State.
