Ellen DeGeneres Reveals Why She Relocated to the UK After Trump’s 2024 Victory
American talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has opened up about her decision to move permanently to the United Kingdom, citing political concerns and the growing threat to LGBTQ+ rights in the United States.
During a live conversation with British broadcaster Richard Bacon at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire just a short distance from her new home in the Cotswolds Ellen explained how what was meant to be a short stay turned into a permanent move.
DeGeneres revealed that she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, originally planned to spend only three to four months each year in the UK. However, the couple made the decision to stay after the results of the November 2024 U.S. presidential election, which saw Donald Trump return to power.
“We arrived the day before the election, woke up to crying emojis from friends, and I knew he won,” Ellen recalled.
Beyond political disappointment, the Emmy-winning host expressed deep concerns about the rollback of LGBTQ+ rights in the U.S., including renewed efforts to challenge same-sex marriage.
The candid conversation drew applause from attendees and has since sparked conversation online, particularly among fans and LGBTQ+ advocates.
