Emma Watson Banned from Driving for Six Months After Speeding Violation
British actress Emma Watson has been banned from driving for six months after accumulating penalty points from multiple traffic offences, including a recent speeding violation.
The 35-year-old star, best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series, was caught driving at 38mph in a 30mph zone in Oxford on July 31, 2024. At the time, she already had nine active penalty points on her licence. The latest infraction added three more, triggering an automatic disqualification under UK driving laws.
Watson did not appear in person at the brief hearing held on Wednesday at the High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court. She was represented by her legal counsel, Mark Haslam, who told the court that the actress accepts the court’s decision and is fully prepared to comply with all penalties, including the £1,044 fine imposed.
Watson, who is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Creative Writing at the University of Oxford, has not made any public comment on the matter.
The court’s ruling brings renewed attention to the UK’s penalty points system, which mandates a driving ban for motorists who reach or exceed 12 points within a three-year period. Legal experts note that while the ban is procedural, public figures often face heightened scrutiny when such issues become public knowledge.
The actress, who has maintained a relatively low profile in recent years while continuing her academic and philanthropic pursuits, is expected to serve the ban in full without further contest.
