Escaped Elephants Kill Farmer in Ogun Community, Triggering Safety Concerns

A tragic incident occurred in Ogun State as a farmer, identified as Musa Kalamu, was trampled to death by a herd of elephants that reportedly escaped from a government-owned forest reserve.

The attack took place in Onitasin Imobi, a rural settlement in Ijebu East Local Government Area. The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, confirmed that the Divisional Police Officer in Ogbere received a distress call at approximately 4:20 p.m. on Monday, alerting authorities about the deadly encounter.

The State Commissioner for Forestry, Taiwo Oludotun, also confirmed the incident. According to his statement, the elephants broke loose from the reserve and attacked Kalamu, who succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to the hospital.

“The DPO Ogbere received information from Itasin community on 28/07/2025 at about 1620hrs that elephants escaped from a government reserve and attacked one Musa Kalamu who died on the way to the hospital,” Oludotun stated.

He added that officials from the Ministry of Forestry were promptly dispatched to the area to contain the situation and prevent further casualties. The community has since returned to calm, although a video showing the lifeless body of the victim has been circulating on social media, sparking public concern.

Authorities continue to monitor the area and assess measures to ensure such incidents do not recur.
