Ex-UBA Banker Explains Why She Left Banking Career in Nigeria to Wash Dishes in Italy
A former staff member of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) has shared the reasons behind her bold decision to resign from her banking job in Nigeria and relocate to Italy, where she now works as a dishwasher.
The woman, who goes by the TikTok handle @freshstartdiaries, first caught public attention in August when she revealed in a viral video that she had abandoned her career at UBA to start afresh abroad. Her story quickly sparked widespread reactions and curiosity across social media.
In a recent interview, the ex-banker clarified that her decision was not influenced by financial gain, stressing that while her salary at UBA was comfortable compared to her earnings in Italy, peace of mind and quality of life were far more important to her.
She explained that her move was motivated by the desire for personal growth, freedom, and the chance to embrace new opportunities overseas. She also revealed that her late father, who had passed away 15 years earlier, had always dreamed of sending her abroad after her studies. According to her, moving to Italy was a way of keeping that dream alive and honoring his memory.
“Even though I had a stable career, I wanted a life with more freedom and personal development. Leaving a good job was difficult, but I knew starting fresh in Italy was the right step toward a better future,” she said. “Everything I’m doing now is not just for myself but also to fulfill my father’s dream. I know he would be proud of me.”
Addressing critics who considered dishwashing a downgrade from banking, she emphasized that every honest job carries dignity. She described her current life as simpler and more fulfilling, noting that it has taught her humility, patience, and self-reliance—qualities she believes money cannot buy.
Her story has continued to spark debate online, with many praising her courage to prioritize peace of mind over societal expectations.
