Fani-Kayode Faces Backlash as 2018 Tweet on Fulani Killings Resurfaces After Blasting Trump
Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, is facing criticism after an old tweet he made in 2018 accusing Fulani jihadists of killing over 5,000 Christians resurfaced online shortly after he condemned former U.S. President Donald Trump for threatening military action against Nigeria.
The resurfaced tweet, now widely shared across social media, has reignited debate over Fani-Kayode’s past statements and current position. In the 2018 post, he wrote:
“The jihadists who killed the RCCG Evangelist for preaching in Abuja were set free. The ones who killed Bridget, the Deeper Life Pastor’s wife in Kano were set free. No Fulani terrorist has been reprimanded or jailed for killing more than 5,300 Christians in 2018 alone.”
Many Nigerians have accused the former minister of hypocrisy, pointing out that he once condemned the same violence that Trump now references in his controversial remarks about Nigeria.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Fani-Kayode fiercely criticized Trump, calling him a “tyrant” and a “sociopathic megalomaniac” for describing Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” and allegedly threatening to authorize U.S. military intervention.
“Imagine a deranged and godless scumbag like @realDonaldTrump threatening our country with invasion. What a nerve!” Fani-Kayode wrote.
He further argued that Nigerians should not cower in fear, insisting that the nation would stand united to defend its sovereignty. “We will not run,” he said. “We will stay and fight.”
The former minister also accused Trump of hypocrisy and bias, claiming he overlooks atrocities in places like Gaza, Sudan, and Congo, yet seeks to portray Nigeria as a hostile nation. He alleged that Trump is working closely with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom he likened to “a modern-day Hitler.”
The resurfaced tweet has continued to fuel controversy, with Nigerians split between those defending Fani-Kayode’s right to evolve politically and others accusing him of inconsistency and opportunism.
