Farouk Aliyu Defends Late Buhari, Calls for Respect Amid Posthumous Criticism
Former House of Representatives Minority Leader, Farouk Aliyu, has voiced concern over the wave of online criticism directed at late former President Muhammadu Buhari following his death on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, Aliyu, a longtime ally of the former president, described the negative reactions as disappointing and urged Nigerians to show respect for the dead, regardless of differing political opinions.
“It is quite unfortunate that Nigerians are heaping insults on former President Buhari after he has died,” Aliyu said. “Each of us has our shortcomings. Buhari is no exception, but we should honour the legacy of a man who served his country.”
Aliyu acknowledged that Buhari’s presidency was not without flaws, but maintained that his contributions to national development deserve recognition.
“Though Buhari had his shortcomings, he should be respected and praised for his contributions to our national growth,” he added.
The remarks come amid a polarized national reaction to Buhari’s death, with some Nigerians offering tributes to his leadership, while others continue to critique his administration’s policies during his tenure from 2015 to 2023.
