Father of David Nwamini Dies of Heartbreak Amid Ekweremadu Organ Harvesting Saga
The father of Ukpo Nwamini David, the boy taken by Senator Ike Ekweremadu to the United Kingdom for a kidney transplant, reportedly died on Sunday from heartbreak, following years of separation from his son.
Boniface Nwamini Ukpo, one of David’s brothers, confirmed the death to DAILY POST on Monday morning. He revealed that the family has not had contact with David since the tragic incident unfolded in 2022.
“Yes, my father died yesterday (Sunday) afternoon around 12 p.m. It’s very sad because since the incident in 2022, we have not spoken with my brother, David Nwamini,” Boniface said. “My father has been ill ever since the saga began, and yesterday he finally passed away.”
The Ekweremadu case shook Nigeria and the UK after Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and a Nigerian doctor were convicted and sentenced by a London court for illegally trafficking David to harvest his kidney for a transplant to save their ailing daughter.
In 2023, the UK Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) sentenced Ekweremadu to nine years and eight months imprisonment the UK’s first conviction in an illegal organ harvesting case. His wife received a four-year, six-month sentence, while Dr. Obinna Obeta, identified as the middleman, was jailed for 10 years.
All three were found guilty of conspiring to facilitate David’s travel to the UK under false pretenses to harvest his organs.
The tragic family fallout continues to reverberate, with the loss of David’s father marking another heartbreaking chapter in the saga.
