FCT Minister Nyesom Wike opposes convention over unresolved internal disputes

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing a potential internal crisis ahead of its national convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, as Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, threatens to block the event.

The rift is believed to stem from Wike’s longstanding disagreements with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and unresolved issues within the party’s zonal leadership structures, including disputes over the South-South and South-East positions. Wike insists that the party must acknowledge the outcomes of zonal congresses that elected Dan Orbih as National Vice Chairman, South-South, and address the status of Ali Odefa, removed as South-East Vice Chairman by court order.

Speaking on Channels TV, Wike warned that the planned convention could trigger fresh crises if these internal matters are ignored. “Our congress was held in Calabar, and Chief Dan Orbih emerged as the National Vice Chairman. If they don’t agree, that’s another round of crisis,” he said, emphasizing his camp’s commitment to challenging what he perceives as injustices within the party.

Despite Wike’s opposition, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, reaffirmed that all necessary notifications were issued and that preparations for the Ibadan convention are proceeding smoothly. He warned that decisive action under the party constitution would be taken against anyone undermining the party’s collective interests.

PDP National Executive Committee members, including Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor and former National Vice Chairman (South West) Eddy Olafeso, condemned Wike’s stance, asserting that no individual could obstruct the party’s rebuilding process. “The PDP is a party of process and rule of law. The national convention will proceed as scheduled, and there will be zero tolerance for disloyalty,” Ologunagba added.

Former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Chief Bode George, described Wike’s threat as “mere noise,” stressing that the NEC’s decision to hold the convention in Ibadan supersedes any personal ambition. Oyo State PDP Chairman, Dayo Ogungbenro, echoed this sentiment, noting that party leaders would resolve internal disputes ahead of the November convention.

The PDP has been undergoing significant restructuring following defections by key figures, including former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and several governors to the APC and African Democratic Congress. The upcoming convention is expected to elect 19 new members to the National Working Committee as part of efforts to strengthen the party.

While Wike’s camp prepares to challenge the process, party officials remain resolute that the Ibadan convention will proceed, emphasizing that internal disputes will not derail the party’s roadmap for rebuilding and preparing for future elections.
