Federal Government Engages UK to Secure Ike Ekweremadu’s Prison Transfer to Nigeria
The Federal Government of Nigeria is reportedly engaging in talks with the United Kingdom to secure the transfer of former Senate Deputy President, Ike Ekweremadu, to serve the remainder of his prison sentence in Nigeria.
Ekweremadu, who was sentenced to nine years and eight months in 2023 for organ harvesting, has already served approximately three years of his term in a UK prison.
The discussions are part of ongoing diplomatic efforts led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has reportedly dispatched a high-level delegation to meet with UK Ministry of Justice officials to negotiate the transfer.
Ike Ekweremadu served as Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President during the 8th National Assembly from 2015 to 2019, representing the Ebonyi South Senatorial District. He was appointed Deputy Senate President after winning a re-run senatorial election against Senator Eleka Utazi and served under Senate President Ahmed Lawan.
During his tenure, Ekweremadu played a key role in the passage of several critical bills, including the national budget and constitutional amendments, leaving a significant mark on Nigeria’s legislative landscape.
While details of the ongoing negotiation with the UK remain limited, sources indicate that the Federal Government is exploring all legal avenues to facilitate the transfer, allowing Ekweremadu to complete his sentence in his home country.
