FG Reaffirms Diplomatic Talks with US After Trump’s Allegations on Religious Persecution in Nigeria

The Federal Government has reaffirmed that diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the United States remain strong and effective despite recent tensions following remarks by US President Donald Trump.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this in a recent interview, assuring Nigerians that both countries are engaging through established diplomatic channels to resolve misunderstandings.

Trump had, in a Truth Social post last month, alleged that Christianity in Nigeria was under “existential threat” from radical Islamist groups.

He claimed that “thousands of Christians are being killed” and that he had designated Nigeria a “country of particular concern.”

Trump further directed the Pentagon to explore “possible military measures” against terrorist elements in Nigeria a comment that drew sharp criticism from the Federal Government and international observers.

President Bola Tinubu dismissed the allegations, stressing that Nigeria guarantees religious freedom and protects the rights of all faiths. Both China and Russia also urged Washington to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Speaking on Sky News’ The World with Yalda Hakim on Monday night, Idris confirmed that lines of communication between Abuja and Washington had been reopened and were “proving effective.”
