FG to Replace Chalkboards with Smart Boards in All Nigerian Schools by 2027
The Federal Government has announced a bold plan to completely phase out chalkboards in Nigerian schools by 2027, replacing them with smart boards to drive a new era of digital learning.
Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, revealed this during a ministerial roundtable in Abuja, emphasizing that the move is part of the administration’s effort to bridge the digital divide and modernise classroom learning.
He noted that over 60,000 tablets have already been distributed to students in Adamawa, Oyo, and Katsina under the Airtech (AWS) and BESDA programmes, with 30,000 more expected soon.
Alausa added that the upcoming 2026 annual school census will be fully digital, helping the government track student performance, attendance, and dropout rates through real-time data.
He disclosed that only six million out of 30 million pupils currently make it to senior secondary level a challenge the new data-driven approach aims to tackle.
The government also plans to integrate WAEC and JAMB data into the Nigeria Education Management Information System (NEMIS) for seamless monitoring.
UBEC Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to inclusive, technology-based education, noting that the transition will foster interactive learning, reduce out-of-school rates, and ensure equal access to quality education nationwide.
