Fire at Egbin Power Plant Disrupts Power Supply in Lagos and Ogun States
A fire incident at the Egbin Power Plant on August 5, 2025, caused significant disruption to power supply in parts of Lagos and Ogun states.
The fire which broke out around 6:30 a.m originated from a faulty 33kV instrument transformer installed by Egbin Power Plc.
This initial fire subsequently damaged a critical 150 megavolt-ampere (MVA) transformer belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) leading to oil leakage and a tear in the transformer’s main tank.
As a result, the fire caused a temporary reduction in the bulk power supply to key transmission substations including Ikorodu and Odogunyan which serve the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) and parts of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) franchise areas.
Other affected network lines within Lagos State include Sagamu Line 1, Sagamu Line 2 and Maryland Line 2 on the 132kV transmission system.
At the time of the incident, a total load of approximately 47 megawatts was impacted. Power supply was immediately diverted to the substation’s remaining 150MVA transformer which has since been operating under strain, causing increased capacity deficits and resulting in load shedding across the affected areas.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria has assured the public that urgent arrangements are underway to source a replacement transformer and restore full power supply as quickly as possible.
The company has also coordinated with IKEDC and Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) to assist in managing power loads during the restoration period.
TCN offered apologies for the inconvenience caused and pledged to work diligently to resolve the disruption and stabilize electricity supply in Lagos and surrounding areas.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s power infrastructure and underscores the critical need for maintenance and investment to prevent future outages affecting millions of residents and businesses in Lagos State.
