Five Bodies Recovered Along Lagos Riverbank Amid Rising Cult Violence

At least five bodies were discovered along the riverbank in the Oreta area of the Igbogbo community on Wednesday, while another individual was brutally killed in Bayeku on Tuesday, both within Lagos State’s Ikorodu area.

Preliminary findings suggest the incidents may be linked to the surge in cult-related violence across parts of Lagos. These developments come as clashes between rival cult groups have intensified, prompting the Lagos State Police Command to redeploy divisional heads to affected areas.

Residents reported that the Bayeku attack involved a gruesome killing in which the victim’s wrist and leg were severed. A local source, speaking anonymously, indicated that some community members believe the Bayeku killing may be tied to land disputes rather than cultism.

At Oreta, residents confirmed police presence at the riverbank after the recovery of five bodies. “Some people are saying it was the river that brought the five bodies, but the cause of death remains unknown,” said one community member.

A short video published by Naija Confra, a platform known for exposing cult activities, showed some corpses along the riverside, including one in a blue hoodie lying facedown and another in a black-and-white shirt surrounded by bloodstains.

The Executive Chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, Hammed Aroyewun, confirmed the incidents and reassured residents that security measures are being intensified. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Oluwaseun Ajayi, he said:

“The incident, which shook the community and heightened fears over safety, drew an immediate response from the Council Chairman. We are working closely with security agencies to apprehend those responsible and ensure swift justice. Residents deserve to live in peace and without fear.”

The chairman also urged calm and law-abiding behavior while security patrols continue across Baiyeku and neighboring areas.

This latest tragedy follows another violent cult clash earlier this week on Lagos Island, where three suspected cultists were killed during a festival, sparking panic and gunfire along deserted streets.

Calls to the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, for comment were unsuccessful at press time.
