Flooding Raises Alarm Over Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Design Flaws
Floodwaters have begun to threaten parts of the newly constructed Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, sparking growing public concern over alleged poor drainage infrastructure along the route.
In a video circulating online, a concerned Nigerian citizen highlighted the rising flood levels in several sections of the highway, particularly behind Chartered House on Ogombo Road in Ajah, near Landmark Estate and Laredia Boulevard.
The footage shows water pooling across sections of the road, casting doubt on the engineering integrity of the multi-billion naira project.
“I don’t understand why proper drainage hasn’t been installed,” the narrator says while documenting the situation. “I just want to show what’s happening. Is this not going to be a problem?”
He called on the Nigerian government and the contractors responsible for the project to urgently dispatch engineers to address the issue before it worsens. “This is not the only place affected,” he added. “This problem exists in several parts of the road.”
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, a major federal infrastructure project expected to span over 700 kilometers, is intended to connect key cities along Nigeria’s coastline and boost economic activity. However, early signs of infrastructure failure just months into construction have fueled concerns about poor execution and sustainability.
Citizens and environmentalists are now urging authorities to conduct an urgent review of the project’s drainage design and take corrective measures to avoid further deterioration or potential accidents.
The Nigerian public awaits a formal response from the Federal Ministry of Works and the contractors overseeing the project.
