Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Dies at 82 in London
Nigeria is in mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in a London hospital on Sunday after a prolonged illness. He was 82 years old.
Buhari died at approximately 4:30 p.m. local time at The London Clinic, where he had been receiving treatment for several weeks.
The news was confirmed by his family and former spokesperson Garba Shehu, and later announced by President Bola Tinubu’s office.
President Tinubu expressed his condolences to Buhari’s widow Aishat Buhari, and ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to London to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.
As a mark of respect, President Tinubu declared seven days of national mourning and directed that flags be flown at half-mast across the country. An emergency Federal Executive Council meeting has also been scheduled in honor of the late leader.
Buhari’s passing marks the end of a significant era in Nigerian politics. He first rose to national prominence as a military ruler after a coup in 1983, serving as Head of State until 1985.
Decades later he returned to power as a democratically elected president in 2015, making history as the first Nigerian to defeat an incumbent president at the ballot box. He was re-elected in 2019 and served until 2023.
Throughout his tenure, Buhari was known for his anti-corruption stance, efforts to combat insecurity, and economic reforms.
His leadership style was often described as austere and disciplined, with a focus on rooting out government corruption and addressing the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast.
Tributes have poured in from across Nigeria and the international community. Former leaders governors, and political figures have lauded Buhari’s dedication to public service and his commitment to the nation. President Tinubu described him as a patriot, soldier, and statesman whose legacy of sacrifice and service will endure.
Buhari’s burial is expected to take place in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites. Details of funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in the coming days.
