Former President Donald Trump to Meet Vladimir Putin Soon in Bid to End War in Ukraine
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the coming days to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.
The announcement came amid increasing diplomatic activity and after Trump set a deadline for Russia to cease hostilities or face new sanctions.
According to Kremlin officials the summit is expected to take place soon possibly in the United Arab Emirates though specific details such as the date and venue have yet to be finalized.
Trump has expressed frustration with the ongoing conflict, calling it a “horrific war” and warning of sanctions against Russia and any countries continuing to purchase Russian energy supplies if Moscow does not take steps toward peace.
He issued an ultimatum for a ceasefire, which is set to expire shortly and indicated he would decide on further actions based on Putin’s response.
While Trump initially suggested that a meeting with Putin would also require the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy he has since clarified that this is not a precondition for the talks. Diplomats have indicated that the possibility of a trilateral meeting including Zelenskyy might be discussed subsequently, but no firm plans have been made.
Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, has held multiple meetings with Putin since February 2025, though the discussions have yet to yield significant breakthroughs.
The upcoming summit is seen as a critical moment in diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict, which began in February 2022 and has resulted in widespread devastation.
The announcement has drawn mixed reactions with some European leaders cautiously optimistic while others remain skeptical about Russia’s willingness to alter its military campaign.
Analysts have noted that the announcement boosted Russian financial markets reflecting investor hopes that diplomacy could help stabilize the geopolitical situation.
This planned meeting marks the first summit between Trump and Putin regarding Ukraine since the conflict escalated and it follows previous encounters between U.S. and Russian leaders including the last U.S.-Russia summit in 2021 between Putin and then-President Joe Biden.
The U.S. administration continues to prepare for the summit logistics as global attention focuses on whether the talks can facilitate a pathway to peace or if the conflict’s intractability will persist.
