Four Children Among 15 Killed in Major Russian Attack on Kyiv

In a devastating overnight strike Russian forces launched a large-scale aerial attack on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv killing at least 15 people including four children and injuring dozens more officials confirmed on August 28, 2025.

The assault involved a barrage of missiles and hundreds of drones targeting residential areas schools, offices and critical infrastructure across multiple districts of Kyiv.

The Darnytskyi district bore the brunt, with a five-story residential building completely destroyed and 12 fatalities reported there alone. The Shevchenkivskyi district also suffered casualties.

Among the dead were children aged 2, 14, and 17, with one other child reported killed highlighting the profound human toll of the attack. Approximately 38 people were injured, some critically and many remain hospitalized including several children.

Search and rescue operations involving hundreds of emergency workers continued through the night to recover potential victims trapped under rubble.

Kyiv’s local authorities described the attack as “massive” and “coordinated from multiple angles,” condemning the targeting of civilian areas.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy decried the strike as “a horrific and intentional killing of civilians,” emphasizing that Russia chose violence over diplomacy amid ongoing peace efforts. He called for stronger international sanctions against Moscow.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported intercepting the majority of the Russian offensive, shooting down over 560 drones and multiple missiles. Russian forces used a mix of hypersonic, ballistic, cruise missiles and Shahed-type drones in the assault.

The attack also damaged key sites including the European Union mission building in Kyiv with EU officials condemning the strike as an attack on diplomacy itself.

The international community continues to monitor the escalating conflict as Kyiv mourns the loss of civilians including its youngest victims, while grappling with the destruction caused by this lethal overnight bombardment.

Emergency and rescue efforts are ongoing as the city seeks to recover from one of the deadliest attacks in recent months.
