Four Dead, Dozens Injured as Gunmen Open Fire at Chicago Rapper Mello Buckzz’s Album Launch

Tragedy struck in Chicago’s River North neighbourhood on Wednesday night as unidentified gunmen opened fire outside a packed album release party for rising rapper Mello Buckzz, leaving four people dead and over a dozen others injured in a brazen drive-by shooting.

The violence occurred around 11 p.m. outside Artis Restaurant and Lounge, where fans had gathered to celebrate the launch of Mello Buckzz’s new album, Hollyhood.

According to police reports, a dark-colored vehicle approached the venue on West Chicago Avenue, before at least three assailants opened fire on the crowd standing outside. Surveillance footage reportedly shows the car circling the block before unleashing a hail of bullets in what authorities believe was a targeted and premeditated attack.

“They didn’t care who was struck. In just seconds, they managed to shoot 18 people,” said Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling during a Thursday press briefing.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the male victims as Leon Andrew Henry, 25, and Devonte Terrell Williamson, 23 the latter reportedly dating Mello Buckzz. The two female victims were identified as Aviance King and Taylor, the latter named by the rapper herself. Four others remain in critical condition.

“Prayers up for all my sisters. God please wrap your arms around every last one of them. Everything feels like it’s crashing down,” she wrote in an emotional post.

Authorities believe Mello Buckzz was the intended target of the attack but had already left the venue before the shooting began. Reports suggest the rapper is affiliated with the No Limit Muskegon Boys, a gang linked to Chicago drill artist G Herbo, who also features on her new album.

Detectives recovered both handgun and rifle shell casings at the scene, including some from within the club. The Artis Lounge has since been ordered closed pending further investigation.

Police are currently working with federal agencies amid concerns of potential retaliation. Heightened security measures are being implemented across Chicago during the Independence Day weekend to prevent further violence.

“We’re doing everything we can to anticipate and prevent any retaliatory actions,” said Snelling.
