Four Dead, Others Injured as Three-Storey Building Collapses in Kano After Heavy Downpour.

Tragedy struck the Sabon Gari area of Kano State on Sunday evening when a three-storey building collapsed following several hours of intense rainfall, leaving at least four people dead and others injured.

The building, located on Abedi Street, crumbled under heavy rain, trapping many residents beneath the debris. Emergency responders from the Kano State Fire Service, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the police rushed to the scene to conduct a rescue operation that extended into the night.

According to Saminu Yusif, spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service, 15 people have been rescued so far. Of those, four were confirmed dead, two sustained serious injuries, and nine others were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

“The rescue operation is ongoing. We are carefully searching every part of the collapsed structure and evacuating debris, as there are fears that more victims may still be trapped,” Yusif said.

The incident has reignited concerns over building safety standards, poor drainage systems, and the impact of extreme weather on infrastructure. Experts say prolonged exposure to heavy rainfall likely weakened the structural integrity of the building.

The disaster comes just days after the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued a red alert warning that over 20 states, including Kano, Lagos, Sokoto, Benue, and Edo, face heightened risks of flash flooding in July due to intensified rainfall patterns.

Despite billions allocated to ecological and disaster response funds, many Nigerians have criticized state governments for failing to implement preventive measures.
