From ₦700 a Day to Legal Triumph: Law Graduate Nwanneka Joel Set for Call to Bar

A young Nigerian law graduate, Nwanneka Joel, is inspiring thousands after sharing his journey from humble beginnings as a bricklaying labourer to the cusp of a professional legal career.

Joel’s story surfaced on social media platform X after a developer, @sirjarus, sparked a conversation about rising rates for construction site labourers in Nigeria.

In the thread, many users revealed their own experiences working as labourers to survive, challenging the notion that such work is only for the uneducated.

Amid the conversation, Joel shared his own experience during his early university years. He recounted how he took advantage of the 2018/2019 ASUU strike to work as a bricklayer, earning just ₦700 per day to fund his law degree.

“That was me utilising the ASUU strike to raise my fees as a Year 1 student,” Joel wrote. “That wasn’t the last hard labour I did while in university… But today, it’s all testimony. How much did I make? ₦700/day.” His post included old photos of himself on construction sites, which struck a chord with many Nigerians admiring his resilience.

Now, years after those early struggles, Joel is set to realize his dream as he prepares for his Call to Bar on September 25, 2025. His story has been widely celebrated across social media as a testament to perseverance, faith, and the transformative power of hard work.

Joel’s journey is a reminder that humble beginnings do not define one’s future, and determination can turn even the toughest challenges into inspiring success stories.
