“From Power to Reflection”: Viral Video of Ex-President Ibrahim Babangida in Wheelchair Sparks Mixed Reactions Across Nigeria
A recent viral video showing Nigeria’s former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), now 83, sitting motionless in a wheelchair, has ignited a wave of public reaction on social media from sympathy and nostalgia to reflections on aging, power, and legacy.
The footage, which surfaced online on June 26, 2025, captures the once-formidable leader seated beside Gambo Abubakar, the brother of Niger State Governor Umar Bago. While Babangida’s health challenges have been known in elite circles, many Nigerians were caught off guard by his frail appearance.
Online reactions ranged from emotional reflections on the fleeting nature of life to reminders that even the most powerful leaders eventually succumb to age. Users posted messages like “Stay humble, same powerful man now in a wheelchair,” and “We start as babies and end as babies—go easy on life.”
Some comments expressed admiration, noting that Babangida, despite his controversial legacy, has lived long enough to see his great-grandchildren—something many consider a blessing.
Babangida, often referred to as “IBB,” was the military ruler of Nigeria from 1985 to 1993. He remains one of the country’s most polarizing figures, chiefly remembered for annulling the historic June 12, 1993 election widely believed to have been won by Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola.
Earlier this year, in February 2025, Babangida made headlines when he publicly apologised for annulling the 1993 election and finally acknowledged Abiola as the rightful winner 32 years after the fact. The apology was seen as a watershed moment in Nigeria’s democratic reckoning.
The new video has reignited public discourse about leadership, accountability, and the inevitable passage of time. While some Nigerians viewed his current condition as a natural phase of life, others couldn’t help but tie it to the moral consequences of past decisions made during his time in power.
Regardless of perspective, one thing is clear the viral clip has humanised a former military strongman, reminding Nigerians that power, no matter how vast, is ultimately temporary.
