Germany Suspends New Aid to Rwanda Over Alleged Support for M23 Rebels in Congo

In a significant move, Germany has announced the suspension of new financial aid to Rwanda, citing concerns over the country’s alleged support for the M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This decision comes amid heightened international pressure on Rwanda to withdraw its forces and cease backing the rebel group.

Germany’s development ministry stated that it will not only halt new financial commitments but also reassess existing development cooperation with Rwanda. Additionally, high-level participation in development events organized by the Rwandan government will be suspended, and an appropriate response will be sought regarding multilateral initiatives.

The M23 rebels have made substantial gains in eastern Congo, capturing key cities like Goma and Bukavu, leading to widespread condemnation from the international community.

UN experts have reported that approximately 4,000 Rwandan soldiers are involved with the M23 in the region, which is rich in valuable mineral resources.

Germany’s move follows similar actions by other countries, including Britain and Canada, which have also imposed sanctions or suspended aid to Rwanda over the conflict.

Rwanda denies supporting the M23, claiming it is defending itself against ethnic Hutu-led militias in Congo.

The German government informed Rwanda of its decision in advance, reiterating the European Union’s stance and expectations for Rwanda to withdraw its forces and end support for the M23.

This development marks a significant escalation in international efforts to address the ongoing conflict in eastern Congo.
