Germany’s Parliament Approves Historic Constitutional Reform to Boost Defense Spending

Israel has dramatically escalated its military campaign in Gaza, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning that recent strikes killing hundreds of Palestinians are only the beginning of a broader assault. The Israeli military has encircled northern Gaza refugee camps, citing intelligence that Hamas is regrouping, while southern Gaza faces intensified ground operations and forced evacuations.

Deadly Airstrikes: On March 18, Israel launched Operation Might and Sword, a surprise aerial and artillery barrage across Gaza that killed 404+ Palestinians, including 263 women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

The strikes targeted Hamas leaders, infrastructure, and residential areas, collapsing shelters and prisons.

Northern Gaza Encirclement: The IDF has surrounded Jabalya refugee camp and other northern areas, citing evidence of Hamas rebuilding tunnels and regrouping forces. Military officials claim the operation aims to disrupt militant networks ahead of a potential ground invasion.

Southern Gaza Offensive: In Tel al-Sultan, near Rafah, Israeli forces encircled neighborhoods, ordered evacuations, and raided Hamas command centers. Civilians were forced to flee on foot, with reports of heavy gunfire and displaced families.

Netanyahu’s government halted ceasefire negotiations after Hamas refused to extend a January truce, demanding instead a permanent end to hostilities in exchange for hostage releases.

The prime minister declared that future talks would occur under fire, vowing to dismantle Hamas entirely.

Aid groups warn of catastrophic shortages after Israel blocked food, medicine, and fuel to Gaza since March. Hospitals are overwhelmed, and displaced families face dire conditions in overcrowded shelters.

The U.S. backed Israel’s actions, while the UN Security Council convened an emergency session. Hamas condemned the strikes as a war crime, though it has not yet retaliated militarily.

Israeli officials are weighing a full-scale ground invasion, potentially involving five army divisions and prolonged military occupation. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned that resistance could lead to Gaza’s annexation.
