Getafe Coach Rejects €20m Christantus Uche Transfer to Wolves Despite Club’s Consent.
Getafe manager José Bordalás has expressed strong opposition to the proposed €20 million transfer of Nigerian forward Christantus Uche to Wolverhampton Wanderers, despite the club already reaching an agreement for the deal.
Club president Ángel Torres confirmed ahead of Getafe’s 2–1 victory over Sevilla that the transfer was in place, citing La Liga’s strict salary cap rules as the main reason behind the sale. “We’re not in favour of selling our best players, but La Liga regulations force us to comply,” Torres explained. He added that Uche would undergo medicals before signing for Wolves, admitting he was “forced to sell.”
However, Bordalás struck a defiant tone after the Sevilla match, underlining Uche’s crucial role in his squad. “I’m against him leaving; he’s a very important player. If Uche leaves, we’ll face a very serious problem. We can’t start from scratch every season. For us, he’s fundamental to our attack, and losing him would be a major issue,” the manager warned.
The 22-year-old Nigerian only joined Getafe last summer for €550,000, initially as a defensive midfielder, before being converted into a forward. His impressive form has since skyrocketed his value, prompting Wolves’ €20m offer an amount still short of his €25m release clause.
Reports from AS indicate that Uche is happy in Madrid, but his agent who maintains close ties with Wolves’ part-owner Jorge Mendes is pushing for the deal to go through. Mendes, one of football’s most influential agents, is also expected to earn a significant commission if the transfer is completed.
The situation leaves Getafe caught between financial compliance with La Liga rules and Bordalás’ determination to keep one of his most influential players. As negotiations continue, the final decision may come down to balancing the club’s financial pressures against its sporting ambitions.
