Global Movement Gears Up for International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM on February 6

On February 6, 2025, the world will observe the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a critical occasion aimed at raising awareness and mobilizing action against this harmful practice that affects over 230 million girls and women globally.

This year’s theme, Step Up the Pace, emphasizes the need for accelerated efforts and stronger alliances to eradicate FGM

.Despite some progress—such as nearly 7 million girls accessing protection services and 48 million pledging to abandon the practice—systemic changes remain slow. Conflicts, gender inequality, and entrenched cultural norms continue to jeopardize the safety of girls.

The UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme highlights the urgency of this issue, calling for collaborative efforts among governments, health workers, youth, and survivors to ensure that future generations are protected.

significant event will take place on February 6 at 14:00 CET, featuring a global advocacy webinar hosted by the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme. This session will include contributions from key figures like Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, who will announce new guidelines aimed at training health workers to prevent FGM and support survivors.

In light of these developments, organizations worldwide are encouraged to participate in advocacy efforts by sharing survivor stories and engaging in discussions using the hashtag #Unite2EndFGM.

The collective aim is clear: to create a world where no girl has to endure the harmful consequences of FGM.

As we approach this important day, it is imperative that individuals and communities unite in their commitment to ending FGM once and for all. The call to action is loud and clear.
