Goodluck Jonathan Reportedly Set for 2027 Presidential Comeback Under PDP

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is reportedly preparing to re-enter the presidential race in 2027 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to sources close to the former leader, Jonathan has accepted the idea in principle, citing Nigeria’s worsening poverty and hardship as a driving reason behind his potential return.

The decision is said to be gaining strong support from influential political figures and elder statesmen who view Jonathan’s past tenure as a period of relative stability. One insider revealed that PDP leaders recently met with him in The Gambia to convince him to accept the party’s presidential ticket, offering their full backing.

Jonathan has also reportedly held meetings with key national figures, including former military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida (IBB), and is actively building support across the South-South region. Political strategists close to the PDP believe a one-term presidency under Jonathan could serve as a stabilizing phase, after which power may be rotated back to the North in 2031 with minimal resistance.

The growing nostalgia for Jonathan’s previous administration has been echoed by PDP members and citizens alike, with some expressing regret over his 2015 electoral loss.

A political associate, Abdullahi, told BBC Hausa that Jonathan is now being viewed as a “rescue figure” for the country. He added that the former president is setting specific conditions for his return, including clarity on the party’s primary process and assurances regarding his political role.

Although no official declaration has been made, preparations are reportedly underway for a potential 2027 bid, setting the stage for what could become one of the most significant political comebacks in Nigeria’s democratic history.
