Goodluck Jonathan Set to Join 2027 Presidential Race, Says Jerry Gana
Former Minister of Information and Orientation, Professor Jerry Gana, has revealed that ex-President Goodluck Jonathan will contest the 2027 presidential election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking to reporters after the PDP Congress held in Minna, Niger State, over the weekend, Gana expressed confidence that Jonathan has the political strength to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and return to Aso Rock a decade after leaving office.
Jonathan, who lost his 2015 re-election bid to Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC), saw his defeat bring an end to the PDP’s 16-year dominance. Since then, the party has struggled with internal divisions while attempting to reclaim power.
Gana told journalists that Nigerians are now calling for Jonathan’s return after experiencing two other presidents since his departure. He said: “In 2015, former President Goodluck Jonathan said his ambition was not worth the blood of Nigerians.
After him, another President ruled for eight years, and now another has ruled for two years. Nigerians have seen the difference, and the difference is very clear. Nigerians are now asking us to bring back our friend, former President Goodluck Jonathan.
I can confirm that Goodluck Ebele Jonathan will contest the presidential election in 2027 as PDP candidate, and we should be prepared to vote for him to return as President again.”
While Jerry Gana and other PDP leaders continue to push for Jonathan’s comeback, the former president himself has remained cautious. In past interviews, Jonathan has refrained from openly declaring his interest in the race, instead stressing his commitment to peace-building and democracy across Africa.
He has maintained that leadership is not a role to be pursued at all costs, leaving his official stance on 2027 still uncertain.
