Governor Eno’s Defection Won’t Derail PDP’s Fortunes – Ex-Lawmaker Michael Enyong

A former member of the House of Representatives and prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Michael Enyong, has downplayed the impact of Governor Umo Eno’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating it will not hinder PDP’s performance in the 2027 elections.

Enyong, popularly known as ‘Babantan’, asserted during an interview in Uyo on Monday that the PDP remains structurally intact in the state. He emphasized that the party’s grassroots supporters and key stakeholders, who have consistently secured victories, are still firmly with the PDP.

The ex-lawmaker urged the PDP’s national leadership to challenge Eno’s defection in court and press for his seat to be declared vacant, citing the legal implications of switching parties after benefiting from the PDP platform in the 2023 elections.

He recounted his own political track record under the PDP banner, from winning elections in 2015 and 2019 to being recognized as the party’s gubernatorial candidate in 2023 before a Supreme Court ruling favored Eno.

Enyong criticized the governor’s move as a display of political double standards, especially after Eno reportedly stated he intended to maintain control of the PDP structure while aligning with the APC.

He concluded by reaffirming that the PDP remains a dominant political force in Akwa Ibom, likening the party to a political “religion” in the state, and predicted a sweeping victory for PDP in 2027.
