Governor Uzodinma Rewards Imo-Born Super Falcons Stars and Coach with ₦70 Million After WAFCON Victory
In recognition of their outstanding performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has gifted ₦70 million to Imo-born members of the Super Falcons, including six players and a coach.
The beneficiaries Chiamaka Nnadozie, Jennifer Echegini, Osinachi Ohale, Oluchi Oluehi, Chinwendu Ihezuo, and Michelle Alozie each received ₦10 million. Assistant coach Ann Chiejine was also rewarded with ₦10 million, bringing the total amount to ₦70 million.
The rewards were presented at a special reception held at the Imo State Government House in Owerri, following Nigeria’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Morocco in the WAFCON final on Sunday.
Governor Uzodinma praised the athletes for making Imo State and Nigeria proud, describing them as worthy ambassadors and role models for young women across the country.
“Your dedication, resilience, and performance have inspired millions,” the Governor said. “This token of appreciation is our way of saying ‘thank you’ for your service to the state and the nation.”
This follows a national gesture by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who had earlier rewarded each member of the team with $100,000, a three-bedroom house, and conferred on them the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) national honour.
The Super Falcons’ WAFCON 2024 win has sparked nationwide celebrations, with several state governments recognizing and rewarding players from their regions.
