Grimes Slams Elon Musk’s X, Calls the Platform “A Poison” and “A Prison”
Canadian singer and producer Grimes has publicly criticized X (formerly Twitter), calling the platform “a poison” and “a prison,” in a post that expresses her growing disillusionment with social media.
Although she didn’t mention her ex-partner Elon Musk the current owner of X by name, the message left no doubt about her sentiments regarding how the platform has changed since Musk’s controversial takeover in 2022.
Grimes, who shares three children with Musk, wrote:
“Okay, I’ve basically been entirely off social media and returning here it is overwhelmingly, abundantly and profoundly clear that this place and all of these places are a poison a prison of utterly short-form deep-sounding nonsense attached to no one that your brain will discard imagining it’s learning.”
The avant-garde artist also described X as “a theatre” and “a s**y pale simulacra of a life,” suggesting the platform has become a performative and superficial space, far removed from authentic human connection.
Grimes and Musk ended their romantic relationship nearly four years ago but continue to co-parent their children. Her latest post has reignited public discussion around Musk’s influence on social media and the ongoing transformation of X under his leadership.
The singer’s bold remarks echo sentiments shared by a growing number of digital users and creatives who feel alienated by the algorithm-driven, polarizing nature of modern social platforms.
