In a recent statement signed by Iwolode Samuel, the organization’s Director of Public Engagement and Operation, COAIG emphasized the importance of fairness, inclusivity, and historical equity in the party’s decision-making processes.
This announcement comes in response to concerns raised by the Osun Progressives Independent Forum (OPIF) regarding the issue of zoning.
The coalition argued that zoning serves as a crucial mechanism to ensure balanced representation and prevent regional marginalization in the state, asserting that it provides every part of Osun the opportunity to lead and contribute to its development.
“By advocating for a move to Osun West, we aim to promote unity in diversity and empower historically underrepresented areas to take the lead,” stated the organization in their press release.
While acknowledging the challenges faced in past implementations of zoning principles, COAIG clarified that these issues stemmed from a lack of transparency, rather than a flaw in the zoning concept itself.
They also asserted the necessity for clear, democratic procedures to select candidates who simultaneously meet zoning criteria and possess merit.
The group articulated that zoning the gubernatorial ticket to Osun West could reinvigorate party members and voters statewide while rectifying long-standing imbalances.
They noted that Osun West has not had the chance to lead in recent elections, and by granting this opportunity, it would demonstrate recognition of the district’s capability and the expectations of the electorate.
Responding to concerns about candidate imposition, COAIG expressed their firm opposition to such practices and called for a transparent selection process to ensure that a competent and visionary candidate emerges from Osun West for the 2026 elections.
Furthermore, they highlighted the importance of expanding party membership and uniting voters with a coherent message that resonates throughout all districts.
“A zoned candidate from Osun West, chosen based on merit and backed by a broad coalition, can act as a powerful catalyst for change and development in Osun State,” the statement concluded.
