Gunfire Erupts During #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest, Sowore Narrowly Escapes

Human rights activist and political figure Omoyele Sowore narrowly escaped gunfire on Monday morning as security forces violently dispersed the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja.

The demonstration, aimed at urging the Federal Government to respect court orders and release IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, began peacefully in the early hours.

However, around 7 a.m., police and military personnel arrived in large numbers, reportedly surrounding the protest grounds. Eyewitnesses said the security operatives fired gunshots and deployed tear gas to scatter the crowd, creating panic among demonstrators. Sowore, alongside several protesters, was forced to retreat to avoid injury.

Some participants were seen fleeing into nearby streets and buildings as the security forces continued to patrol the area. Although no casualties have been officially confirmed, many protesters sustained minor injuries from tear gas exposure.

The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest is part of a larger nationwide movement calling on the Federal Government to ensure Kanu’s immediate release following legal directives. Demonstrations under this banner have taken place in multiple cities, reflecting the high level of public interest and tension surrounding the case.

Sowore, known for his activism and previous involvement in nationwide protests, condemned the use of excessive force, calling for restraint and dialogue between the government and citizens exercising their constitutional rights.

The incident has reignited debates about the handling of peaceful protests in Nigeria and the balance between security measures and citizens’ rights to demonstrate.
