“He Valued His Dignity”: Peter Rufai’s Daughter Reveals Why Legendary Goalkeeper Kept Illness Private Until Death

Confidence Rufai, daughter of late Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai, has opened up about her father’s decision to keep his illness a secret before his passing on July 3, 2025.

Speaking at a solemn “Night of Tributes” held in his honor, Confidence revealed that the iconic footballer chose privacy over publicity, even in his final moments.

“He never wanted sympathy or attention,” she said. “Even in hardship, he chose silence and dignity.”

Rufai, a 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion and Nigerian football legend, was celebrated alongside three other sports heroes at the memorial event organized by Segun Odegbami and supported by Air Peace Chairman, Allen Onyema. The tribute took place at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Confidence expressed deep respect for her father’s quiet strength and patriotism, describing him as a selfless man who gave his all to Nigeria.

“My dad was more than just a footballer—he was a father to many, a quiet leader who felt responsible for those around him, even beyond family,” she added.

She acknowledged that many Nigerians were shocked by the news of his death due to the lack of public updates on his health. However, she emphasized that he deliberately avoided public discussions about his condition.

The family has announced that burial plans are underway and will be made public in due time.

“His reserved spirit lives on in us. When the time is right, more will be revealed,” Confidence said.
