Heavy Rains Trigger Floods and Mudslides in Southern Japan Prompting Mass Evacuations

Heavy rains battered southern Japan’s Kyushu island on August 8, 2025, causing severe flooding and mudslides that prompted emergency evacuation advisories and sheltering orders for more than 360,000 residents in Kagoshima and neighboring Miyazaki prefectures.

The Japan Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported a mudslide buried a house in Aira city with two people rescued and hospitalized.

Television footage showed swollen rivers spilling muddy water into streets and floodwaters reaching knee height in shopping centers notably in Kirishima city.

The torrential rains severely disrupted local transportation halting train and bus services while dozens of flights in and out of Kagoshima airport were canceled.

The Japan Meteorological Agency attributed the intense rainfall to a low-pressure system and forecast continued heavy rain and thunderstorms throughout the day in Kyushu.

Authorities issued the highest-level weather warnings and earnestly urged residents to take early precautions to safeguard lives and property.

In response, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s government established an emergency task force to coordinate disaster response and support for affected communities.

The government pledged to do everything necessary to protect citizens’ safety amid the escalating natural hazards.

This severe weather event compounds previous challenges faced by southern Japan and underscores the ongoing risks of climate-related disasters in the region during the rainy season.
