Hon Atu asks Fg to Intervene on Enugu’s 9th Mile Road
The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Ministry of Environment and relevant government agencies to take a holistic step in addressing the gully erosion menace, particularly in Ugwuonyeama 9th Mile in Enugu State.
The House also urged the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing and Federal Roads Maintenance Agency
(FERMA) to complete the reconstruction of Ugwuonyeama 9th Mile Road to prevent the total collapse of the road.
This followed the adoption of a motion by a member representing Enugu North and South Federal Constituency of Enugu State, Chimaobi Atu, at Wednesday’s plenary.
Atu, in his motion, on the “need for the control of persistent gully erosion along Ugwuonyeama 9th Mile Federal Road in Enugu North And Udi Local Government Areas, informed the House about the devastating effects of erosion in the area.
The lawmaker stated that the road is very strategic to the economy of the South East and the country at large. He explained that the road is a major access for traders in the South East and
neighbouring states
Atu, while calling for urgent action on the road, lamented that “Ugwuonyeama 9th Mile Road has remained a death trap resulting in loss of lives, goods and
services worth millions of naira on a daily basis due to frequent accidents on the bad portions of the road
yet to be completed.”
According to him, “the adverse effects of erosion on these roads have long been ignored and if not checked
may cut off access to other States within the South East.”
