HOUSE OF REPS. MEMBER ELECT, HON. CHIMAOBI ATU, PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR PUBLIC PRIMARY Schools.
The House of Representatives Member Elect, Enugu North and South Federal Constituency, Honourable Chimaobi Sam Atu, has reiterated his commitment towards the restoration of comprehensive public primary education in his constituency. Hon. Chimaobi Atu who was accompanied by the Member Elect Representing Enugu South Rural Constituency, Hon. Princess Obiajulu Ugwu, made the commitment during their tour of selected public primary schools in Enugu North and South federal constituency to commemorate this year’s Children Day. He stated the visit was also to determine areas of urgent need that will form part of his immediate legislative agenda and constituency projects.
According to Hon. Atu, “There is an urgent need to restore the dignity and comprehensiveness that used to be part of our public primary schools.” He added that “Public education all over the country is not desirable because of decades of neglect.”
Addressing some of the Head Teachers in Obeagu and Ugwuaji primary schools, Hon. Atu said he was a product of public school and would love to see glory returned to the system. He added that he is a proud Old Boy of Community Primary School Ugwuaji who benefited so much from his teachers and the government. He explained that “the best gift you can give any child is a proper and comprehensive academic foundation. Primary school is the most solid foundation one can have. If you fail at this point, then the child will struggle throughout his/her academic journey. This is why I will work so hard to attract a lot of federal interventions to our public primary schools. In fact, my interactions with the teachers and the pupils have revealed so much. The State government has done well in some areas but there is a need for all of us to collaborate and restore the dignity of our public schools. It is in our interest to do so”.
Also speaking, State Assembly member-elect, Enugu South Rural Constituency, Hon. Princess Obiajulu Ugwu said she was moved by the commitment of Hon. Atu towards education. Hon. Ugwu also promised to make public education her top legislative priority once they are sworn in next month. She added that there was an urgent need to make public primary schools more attractive to parents and the pupils in her constituency for the overall good of society.
