How universities can survive in today’s world — Oladipo, VC, TAU
The Vice-Chancellor, Thomas Adewumi University, TAU, Oko, Kwara State, Prof. Franscisca Oladipo, has said instituting endowments, securing grants and collaborating with the private sector are some of the ways universities can survive in today’s world and also make the impact expected of them.Oladipo, a Professor of Computer Science, stated this in a zoom interactive session with journalists.According to her, whether private or public, no university can get all the funds it needs from the proprietor.
“In about four years that we came into being, we have shown excellence in the manner we conduct our affairs. We have collaborations with a number of universities within and outside the country and we have won over $178,000 in grant since I came on board about two years ago. We hope to be able to get over $5 million in grants in the next few years.
“ This is because we know that securing grants, instituting endowments and partnering with the private sector to get things done is a sure way of surviving. No proprietor is able to provide all the resources needed, even the government inclusive. We have a master plan for the growth of the university as well as an academic development plan,” she said.
On some of the measures being taken to minimise cost, the VC explained that the university generates its own electricity through solar and that the structures on campus are smart ones.
“Through our solar farm, we even generate more than we need and since the electricity distribution company serving our area would not buy the excess from us, we use it as part of our corporate social responsibility in our host community. We promote SDGs sustainability policy in our host community,” she said.
On what sets the university apart, Oladipo described it as the fastest growing in science and technology in the country.
“We were licensed in 2021 and got our full operational licence in September this year. We started with 13 academic programmes and we now have 27 fully accredited programmes. From three faculties we now have seven. By January 2022, we were rated 252nd in Nigeria by Webo metrics and Times Higher Education, THE and now, we are number 41 in the country. We are building a reputation in the teaching of Nursing, Computer Science, Law, Mass Communication, Engineering among others. We also ensure that our students get at least two international certifications while undergoing their courses of study. We also have work study scheme among others. OME

On the call for the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, to support private universities, the VC opined that private universities also help in training manpower for the society.
“We are advocating that private universities be included in the support being given tertiary institutions by TETFund. As leaders in private universities, we are calling for an amendment to the law establishing the Fund to accommodate private universities. Our Chancellor is also the chairman of private university owners and he is on that cause too. “In the same vein, we want our students to also be part of the beneficiaries of the student loan scheme.”
