“I Did Not Inherit Any Money from My Father; I Built Everything from Scratch” – Aliko Dangote
Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has opened up about his family background, early struggles, and the journey to building his business empire.
In a recent interview, Dangote revealed that while he comes from a lineage of affluence, he carved his own path to success without relying on inherited wealth.
“I did not inherit any money from my father. I built everything from scratch,” Dangote emphasised, underlining that despite his privileged background, all his achievements were self-made.
He shared his journey:
“I came from a wealthy family. My late great-grandfather in the 1940s was actually the richest in West Africa. My late grandfather was one of the wealthiest Nigerians. The family name is Dentata, from my maternal side. My father was fairly rich too, involved both in business and politics.
“But one thing I’m very proud of is that I did not inherit any money from my father. I built everything from scratch to where I am. Whatever I inherited from him in assets, I donated to charity.
“I started working with my uncle for a few months, then went to Lagos and began my own business by buying and selling cement. It was a modest start, but cement builds infrastructure, and Nigeria, like much of Africa, has a huge infrastructure deficit. Most cement was imported at the time, so we started locally, and the rest is history.”
Dangote’s story is a testament to self-made success and determination, showing how vision and hard work can turn humble beginnings into a global business empire.
