“I’m Still Here” – Asisat Oshoala Dismisses Retirement Rumours After WAFCON Triumph

Super Falcons star and six-time African Player of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, has firmly debunked widespread rumours claiming she has retired from international football.

Speaking to journalists in Morocco after Nigeria’s thrilling 3-2 victory over the host nation in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Oshoala made it clear that she is far from hanging up her boots.

Addressing the rumours, the 30-year-old Barcelona Femeni forward said:
“I don’t know where that came from, but agenda must agend. I get it, but I’m not bothered. I’m still here. I’m still playing. I’m still doing my job. That’s what I’m focused on.”

Although she wasn’t a consistent starter throughout the tournament, Oshoala was an essential member of Nigeria’s 23-player squad and played a key supporting role in securing the country’s historic win.

Since making her debut for the Super Falcons in 2013, Oshoala has become one of Africa’s most iconic footballers. She gained global attention during her breakout performance at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and the African Women’s Championship in the same year.

She remains the first African player to score in three consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments, and her latest WAFCON medal brings her tally to four titles — having previously won in 2014, 2016, and 2018.

Oshoala’s statement puts to rest any speculation and reaffirms her commitment to continuing her international career.
