India Partners with UN to Enhance South-South Cooperation and Drive Sustainable Development Goals
India has launched a renewed partnership with the United Nations aimed at promoting South-South cooperation and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through targeted projects supporting digital health, food security and vocational training across several developing countries.
The initiative, facilitated through the India-UN Development Partnership Fund, highlights India’s commitment to fostering solidarity and innovation among developing nations by implementing demand-driven transformational projects in collaboration with UN agencies.
Since its establishment in 2017 this fund has supported more than 75 projects in over 56 countries with a focus on least developed countries and small island developing states.
Key project areas include digital health solutions enhancing healthcare access, programs addressing food security through sustainable agriculture and nutrition interventions, and vocational training aimed at expanding skills and employment opportunities for vulnerable populations in partner countries.
The partnership aligns with the UN Office for South-South Cooperation’s current strategic framework, which prioritizes accelerating six critical transitions: food systems, energy access, digital connectivity, education and skills, jobs and social protection and climate resilience.
These efforts emphasize shared national ownership, capacity building, sustainability, and mutual benefit, reflecting principles central to South-South cooperation.
India’s continued leadership and financial commitment—amounting to $150 million over 10 years—underscore its role as a pivotal partner in enabling multilateral cooperation among the global South to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
This collaboration further exemplifies how South-South partnerships can provide effective, locally relevant solutions to key development challenges, especially in the wake of global disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic, where solidarity and collective action proved critical.
The India-UN collaboration represents a beacon of hope for accelerating sustainable development through inclusive, equitable and innovative cooperation among developing nations.
