INEC Warns Politicians Against Premature Campaigns Ahead of 2027 Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a stern warning to politicians and political parties against launching campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released by Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, the commission emphasized that it has not yet announced the official timetable or schedule for the 2027 polls. As such, any form of political campaigning at this stage is illegal.
Quoting Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act, INEC reminded political actors that campaigns can only commence 150 days before an election and must cease 24 hours prior to the start of voting. The commission also referenced Section 95(1), which mandates that all campaign activities must strictly comply with INEC regulations.
“While individuals are free to express political opinions, coordinated endorsements, early mobilizations, and promotional materials resembling campaign efforts are not permitted until the official campaign window opens,” the statement noted.
INEC also recalled that it had raised concerns about early campaigning in its last meeting with political parties and reiterated its call for full compliance with electoral guidelines.
This warning follows a recent surge in posters and public endorsements, particularly those promoting President Bola Tinubu’s possible bid for a second term, which have appeared in various parts of the country.
INEC urged politicians and their supporters to respect the legal framework governing elections and wait for the official campaign timetable before engaging in electioneering activities.
