Inspector-General of Police Insists Promotions Are Merit-Based, Transparent

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has denied allegations of favouritism in the Nigeria Police Force’s recent promotions, affirming that all elevations under his leadership are guided strictly by merit, professionalism, and established procedures.

Speaking at the decoration ceremony for newly promoted senior officers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, Egbetokun condemned attempts to cast doubt on the integrity of the process, describing them as misguided efforts to undermine public confidence.

“Every promotion exercise, including the accelerated promotion conducted recently, has followed due process, transparency, and merit-based evaluation,” the IGP said. “There is no place for nepotism, tribal sentiment, or bias in our promotions.”

Egbetokun emphasised that the Force rewards diligence, competence, and proven capacity, adding that authority at higher ranks should uplift the institution and strengthen public trust.

The IGP also urged senior officers to adopt community- and intelligence-led policing, leveraging technology to combat evolving crime trends and ensure a smarter, more responsive Force.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting police reforms and the Police Service Commission for ensuring transparency in managing promotions.

Recent promotions include CP Abibo Reuben, elevated to Assistant Inspector General of Police, and 11 Deputy Commissioners promoted to substantive commissioners.

“Every insignia worn at this level represents purpose, not privilege,” Egbetokun noted.
