Israel Intensifies Conflict: Airstrike Targets Syrian Military Headquarters in Damascus Amid Renewed Druze Clashes

Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply on Wednesday as Israel carried out an airstrike on the Syrian military headquarters in Damascus, further intensifying an already fragile situation.

The attack coincides with renewed fighting between Syrian government forces and Druze militias in the southern city of Suwayda, where a fragile ceasefire recently broke down.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the assault, announcing that Israeli forces specifically targeted the entrance of the Syrian Defense Ministry’s command center in the capital.

This operation followed Katz’s stern warning for Syrian troops to withdraw from Suwayda, where clashes between the government and Druze fighters have persisted despite a brief truce declared by Damascus. Israel views these Druze fighters as strategic allies and claims to be defending them.

Al Jazeera’s correspondent Osama Bin Javaid reported witnessing two drone strikes on the Syrian Ministry of Defense building one at the front entrance and another at the rear while Syrian air defenses responded with gunfire as drones continued overhead.

The Israeli Defense Forces confirmed the strikes on their social media platform X, emphasizing vigilance over the evolving situation and readiness for possible further military actions.

This escalation occurs even as international actors, including reports of interventions by former US President Donald Trump’s administration, have called on Israel to halt strikes targeting Syrian military forces in the region.

Meanwhile, Syria remains beset by instability as violence in Suwayda has led to dozens of casualties, with the conflict spilling onto the streets of Damascus and its outskirts. Critics argue Israel’s stated intent to protect the Druze community masks broader strategic aims to weaken Syrian military capabilities and extend its influence in the area.
